What you NEED to know before you book your next Pedicure!

Unfortunately, as Podiatrists in Perth, we often see people too late, after they have already developed an infection from an unsafe pedicure being performed. Most commonly it is a white candida (thrush) infection that you may notice on your toenails after you remove the nail polish. For some people it is a yellowish fungal infection in the toenails. This kind of fungal infection is quite difficult to clear up. And occasionally we see a skin infection on the foot from poorly performed
pedicures or the use of dirty equipment.

So what makes a Pedicure unsafe?

Bacteria and viruses can stay alive on a surface for up to 3 days. And so whether it’s a nail file or cuticle clippers or any tool that touches your skin or nails, if it is not sterile then there is a risk of infection. And bowls or basins for soaking must always have a disposable liner. The last thing you want is to pick up tinea from the person who used the basin before you! Even nail polish can harbour fungal infections in the bottle. We always recommend that you take your own nail polish or purchase a new nail polish at the beauty salon that is for your use only.

There is a growing concern over a number of health risks associated with the beauty therapy industry. The Health Department of WA is in the process of updating the current regulations and guidelines for the Beauty industry, but this will take time. The chance of picking up a serious infection like Hepatitis C or AIDS (yes this does happen in Perth!) makes having an unsafe Pedicure simply not worth it. Some Beauty therapists can demonstrate their practices are safe, and this is something you should always ask about.
